About the Role

Albury Wodonga Health’s Mental Health Service provides specialist clinical assessment, treatment and on-going care to people who have, or who are at risk of a serious mental illness or suicide. Across a range of disciplines they support people of all ages including people with co-occurring substance use problems. Person centred care is provided through a recovery focused model for both urgent and non-urgent cases. 

Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) has 10 specialty community based mental health services, plus three acute care services and three recovery and rehabilitation facilities as well as a service specialising in supporting families, where a parent has a mental illness and connecting people to carer consultants.  

AWH Mental Health Services covers a wide geographical area, spanning 50,000 square kilometres from Southern New South Wales, to North East Victoria. 

The position of Psychiatry Registrar provides direct clinical services to maximise treatment and health care outcomes for consumers: • within an acute inpatient setting; • to departments and units within the health service; • in residential and/or sub-acute bed based settings; or • in a community setting. It is expected that the Registrar will work as a team member within the unit, across the Mental Health and Wellbeing Service and in support of other hospital units, particularly Emergency Department. 

 

Under supervision of specialist Psychiatrists: • Provide person-centred, trauma-informed, gender sensitive, and culturally informed care to all consumers; • Provide effective clinical/medical supervision and treatment to consumers under care. • Compliance/adherence to mental Health Act, the National Standards for mental Health Services and ACHS EQuIP Standards. • Particpate in the training program. •  Participate actively in all local teaching/training/supervision sessions. • Commitment to further ongoing education and professional development, including attendance at recognised training programs, maintaining theoretical knowledge and contributing to local psychiatry educational activities. • Achieve high standards of care by participating in quality activities and accreditation work groups. • Participate in on-call/out of hours on duty rosters as required. • Take comprehensive histories with a range of consumers and presenting problems. • Perform comprehensive mental state examinations on a range of consumers. • Perform comprehensive physical examinations on patients and provide ongoing medical attention for consumers physical health. • Construct suitable diagnostic formulations and management plans. • Obtain corroborative histories from families, previous treatment providers and other sources. • Discuss assessment and management issues with families. • Adequately record clinical information. • Prepare comprehensive discharge summaries of consumers transferred to other wards or discharged to the community. • Present and discuss cases with supervisors. • Participate in education programs for others eg: Staff development, community and lay groups, medical students. • Responsible to the Director via the Senior Staff for the assessment, investigation, treatment and review of consumers admitted to the Unit for acute management. • To ensure consumers/families are given adequate information about management decisions and follow-up plans.
